Why Are You Insecure?

We live in a world where social media is vastly expanding. Too many people are becoming brainwashed by its culture, and thinking that because they do not look a certain type of way they aren’t pretty. We, as a society, need to stop making comparisons to people whom we see on social media, and tearing ourselves apart because we may not look like that. The images that we see can affect the ways in which we view ourselves, so it’s time to be more conscious of the images that we consume.

Model, Lira Galore, has a gorgeous body, but why feel insecure because you don’t look like her? Try and follow different types of people, not just the ones who have the same type of aesthetic. I personally know I will never be “thick” so only following girls who are thick makes no sense. I appreciate all body types, but I know unconsciously that would impact me, and probably lead to insecurities. Hence why I try and follow a variation of people, including ones I can relate to body wise. We have control over the images we see on social media, and if we fall into the trap of comparing ourselves to other people, we should change the images that we associate ourselves with.

It’s also important to remember that a lot people photo-shop their photos, so at the end of the day, we’re aspiring to look like people who don’t even look like themselves. People portray a false façade on social media, e.g. putting filters on their photos and only showing themselves when they look great, which isn’t a true depiction of their actual life constantly creating an illusion. This doesn’t mean that you have to stop liking these images all together or believe that everything on social media is fake. Some people really are just that pretty, and that’s okay too! If we do log on to a social media site, and see someone who we deem as beautiful, we should admire that person’s beauty without questioning our own. Everyone is beautiful in their own way.

It may not be easy at first to stop drawing comparisons with people we see on social media, but it starts with changing our mentality. It’s all about getting to the stage where you’re secure within yourself. Once you have confidence, no one can take that away from you. At the end of the day, people will always have an opinion about you, whether it be positive or negative, but the only one that matters is yours. For example, whilst I was on holiday I was on a beach, and these two older ladies were speaking to me, and they were topless. In the moment I was so confused, but in hindsight I think, good for them. They couldn’t care less what people were saying or thinking, they were confident within themselves and that’s inspiring.
