What Really Happened To Bobrisky?

Idris Okuneye, also known as “Bobrisky” a Nigerian internet sensation famously known for being a self acclaimed male Barbie, was arrested in Lekki, Lagos, Nigeria on Tuesday. Specific details still remain unclear at this time.

There is speculation that Bobrisky was arrested after recently coming out as gay on social media, a criminal offense in Nigeria, while others speculate that it was due to a recent social media feud with Nigerian entrepreneur Toyin Lawani.

Lawani quickly explained that she had nothing to do with Bobrisky’s arrest, having her assistant post on her behalf: “please she has nothing to do with that. You people should stop linking her to it”.

Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer claims to be unaware of the arrest, but perhaps Bobrisky was invited for questioning, or to make a complaint.

So what really happened?

Being of the LGBT community is considered illegal in Nigeria, and has been since 1901, and if found guilty, can result in 14 years of imprisonment in states not not under Shari’a law, and the death penalty for states that are under Shari’a law.

People have taken to social media to express their outrage with the arrest of Bobrisky, after speculating that it was due to him publicly coming out about his sexuality on social media:

Flaw. @GoldenWura tweeted, “Last month, a policeman abducted and raped a 14 yr old girl for 6 days till her vaj ruptured. The NPF in the state begged the girl’s parents to forgive the man because “they’re both northerners” Bobrisky is arrested for being ‘gay’ and suddenly Nigerians know the law. Kmt.”

Exodus and Upheavals @chidzhazenberry also tweeted: “As annoying and problematic as Bobrisky is. The homophobic laws in Nigeria are inhumane.”

Arrest due to fued?

According to Stargist.com, Bobrisky has spoken out for the first time since he was arrested in Lekki, Lagos on November 7th, 2017. “He revealed that the case was reported in Abuja and that he is currently on his way to Abuja to resolve the issue. He said;
“Toyin Lawani asked her lawyer to write petitions against me that I worked for her and I’m selling cream to all her customers. Which was a fat lie. I never worked for Toyin. She was my friend. I can’t remember ever working for Toyin or learning how to make cream from her.

“Then she also said I threatened her. So we are going to Abuja cos that was where the case was reported. Before she wrote petitions against me, she had already threatened me that she is giving me 7 days to go to the internet and apologize to her which I said no way because she offended me. I think because I refused to apologize, she got the police involved.”

Speaking about what transpired at the police station yesterday, Bobrisky said his phones were taken from him and he was told that he needed to wait until morning in order to go to Abuja.

“Yesterday at the police station, I was sitting at the counter and I was told I needed to wait until morning to go to Abuja. My phone was taken from me so I couldn’t talk to anyone. I’m trying to get in touch with my lawyer and all the people I know.

Hopefully more information about what really happened to Bobrisky will arise, and we can end the speculations.
