More Young Women Than Ever Now Identify as Feminists

According to a new study published by the Young Women’s Trust, more young women than ever now call themselves feminists.

This is the result of a survey carried out for Young Women’s Trust by Populus Data Solutions from 25th June – 11th July 2019 with approximately 2000 young women aged 18 to 30 in England and Wales, and a comparison group of 2000 young men.

The charity has revealed that the number of young women who identify as feminists in 2019 has increased by 12% from the previous year.

To be more precise, 67% of young women aged 18-24 now call themselves feminists (approximately 1.8 million individuals in the UK). And for those in the 18-30 age bracket, there has also been an increase in the number of self-declared feminists from 50 to 57%.

But why now?

The Young Women’s Trust suggests this is because younger women are increasingly aware of the inequalities they face in day-to-day life. Indeed, 64% of young women agreed that sexism is a major problem in the UK – while in 2018 this figure was only 58%.

Young Women’s Trust Chief Executive, Sophie Walker, said in a press statement: “It’s fantastic to see so many young women reclaiming a word for so long falsely branded as toxic and now using it to assert their fight for equal rights.”

Mrs. Walker added: “The failure of today’s politicians to respond to women’s needs, the rise of misogynistic populism and the resulting resurgence of activism from the Women’s March to #MeToo has encouraged many young women to take matters into their own hands.

“By asserting themselves as feminist – which let us be clear, is defined in the dictionary as a person who supports the belief that women should have the same rights and opportunities as men –  young women are carrying on the work of women who won the right sit in Parliament and vote a century ago, and taking bold steps to assert their equality.”
