How To Set Yourself Up For Success In Your 20s

Have you thought about what you want to be doing in five years' time? Are you clear about what kind of job you will love to do? Do you know what you want to have achieved by the end of 2020?

If you’re thinking “OMG noo”, don’t freak out, it’s normal to not have all the answers.

Your 20s are a defining era, filled with transitions, changes and also a lot of mistakes. But planning your future and setting yourself up for success is something you should start thinking about now.

Obviously success is not a unique concept. For some, success is about the money. For some others it may be a way of living, a level of freedom, or a nice-house and big-family goal. The truth is, you can define success a hundred different ways — the only thing that matters is what you want for yourself.

However, it is important to start as early as possibile with the right mindset and trust me, you can take the first step today. First thing to do is focus on yourself and what you want, your interest, what you like and what skills you have. Figuring these things out can then help you find direction and a path to take. Once you’ve done that, you can set yourself up for success by devoting your time, energy, and effort to your livelihood and what is most meaningful to you.

Here are five tips on how to do so.

1. Get to know your true self

What are your values, morals, and principles? Before making important decisions and setting goals it’s helpful to consider what’s most important to you. Once you understood what you enjoy the most, what you are good at, what you really value, what your aspirations are, you can start setting goals and visualise them.

2. Develop a learning habit

One of the biggest mistakes you could do is to think that what you’ve learnt in a classroom is enough. The truth is that learning and acquiring new skills is fundamental if you want to be successful. In the age of technology, learning has become very easy. Make full use of internet, even in Netflix, Youtube and IG interviews you can find something new to learn. But don’t forget to read: reading is a completely different experience that slows you down and force you to think deeply.

3. Surround yourself with (new) people

Networking seems to be the key word for everything now a days. Without a robust, profound and diverse network you are restricting your prospects to learn, so if you want to be successful you need to develop and expand the range of you people you know, surrounding yourself with people who are like-minded.

4. Spend less, invest more

Easier sad than done, I know. But in personal finance, time is the most reliable tool for building wealth and success. The younger you are, the more risks you can take with your money, so use this time to your advantage. Obviously, the fruits of the investments are linked to the time variable, but the sooner you can get started saving and investing, the bigger your gains will be over the long term.

5. Always work hard

There is no short cut in life: results come to those who deserve it. Learn from your mistakes and never stop trying, no matter how hard it may seem. Remember that you can achieve success at any age, the important thing is to start trying. So be positive and work hard.
